FVE welcomes Animal Welfare Strategy but wished the Commission to be more ambitious

On 19 January, the European Commission adopted the 2012-2015 Animal Welfare strategy paper.

FVE is pleased that several of its recommendations have been taken into consideration. On the other hand the Federation regrets that the document is not more ambitious in its objectives and planned action: the strategy "could have gone further" in the field of companion animals.

Guidelines to assess fitness for transport of adult bovine animals

The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe, Eurogroup for animals, Animals' Angels, European Livestock Meat Trading Union, International Road Transport Union and the European Livestock Transporters have finalized and officially published the guidelines.

The document is available in English, German, Spanish and French. Italian and Portuguese versions will be ready before the end of the month.

FVE Seminar on antimicrobials

On the occasion of EU Antibiotic Awareness Day, the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) with the support of EC DG Sanco and the Polish Presidency run a successful seminar entitled "Antimicrobials: a true One Health issue"

More than 300 attendants joined the FVE seminar. Speakers fron the Human medicine, veterinary medicine, DG Sanco and European Parliament provided their views to the audience.

EP Resolution about antimicrobial resistance

FVE welcomes the adoption by the European Parliament of a Motion for resolution on antimicrobial resistance. In addition, FVE is pleased to see that European Parliament has taken on board several suggestions made by FVE and other stakeholders to consider antimicrobial resistance as a ''One Health issue'' affecting the health and welfare of people and animals.

FVE welcomes new rules to keep Member States "Echinococcus" free

FVE welcomes the publication of a proposal for a Commission delegated Regulation permitting Echinococcus-free Member States to require a pre-movement treatment of dogs coming from non-free States

In addition FVE underlines that:

- The legislation should also cover commercial movement of pets, esp. puppies
- An EU wide echinococcus risk assessment sutdy is needed
- Permanent identification and registration of pets is desirable

FVE letter to ENVI MEPs

FVE wrote to the ENVI MEPS with regard to the second reading of the proposal for an EU Regulation on the provision of food information to consumers and with particular reference to amendments 353, 359 and 354 (labelling of foods from animals not stunned before slaughter). FVE requested to support amendment 353 (or 359).

EP Resolution: Veterinarian’s right to dispense at stake

Members of the European Parliament have been asked to vote whether or not veterinarians in Europe should retain the right to dispense veterinary medicines in general and antimicrobials in particular; this was met with grave concern by the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE).

Patients and consumers at risk: Modernisation of the professional qualifications Directive carries dangers, say the European sectoral professions

The representative umbrella organisations of European sectoral professions
issued a joint statement, expressing serious concern about the risks posed by the modernisation of the Directive on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications (2005/36/EC). The representatives of the professions are concerned that the modernisation of the Directive will be unduly influenced by the current economic crisis, thus aimed at quick and large-scale production of graduates who will be prematurely dumped on the market.

Identification and registration of companion animals in the European Union: Statement

Following an invitation of Vier Pfoten/Four Pawsand Istituto G. Caporale Teramo, a first round table of representatives of national, EU and international organisations working on databases for companion animals met on 8 September 2010 in Brussels. The meeting was also attended by a representative of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) is pleased to announce that since 1st of January FVE is hosting the Secretariat of the World Veterinary Association (WVA). This will continue the work of the Danish Veterinary Association in Copenhagen, who hosted the WVA Secretariat since 1994.

Animal and human health: a public good

"The recent outbreaks of avian influenza have highlighted once more the link between animal and public health and the importance of veterinary and medical sectors working in a coordinated way", recalled Androulla Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Health. Speaking at the opening conference of the EU Veterinary Week 2009 - a joint initiative of DG Sanco and the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) - she pointed out that his year's event also marked the launch of the consultation on the future EU Animal Health Law.

World Veterinary Day to highlight role of veterinarians in society

FVE holds photo competition

"This year, World Veterinary Day, an initiative of the World Veterinary Association, will be celebrated on April 25. It will be the occasion to highlight the need for an integrated approach of veterinary and human medicine", said Walter Winding, president of the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE), referring to the One Health policy promoted by FVE. "Veterinarians play a pivotal role between animals, their owners and society, he reminded. However, this role is not confined to animal health, but also animal welfare and public health, including food safety."

To highlight 'World Veterinary Day', FVE will be holding a photo competition with the theme "Veterinarians and animal owners, a winning partnership". The competition will be judged in two separate categories (vets and farmers/farm animals; vets and pet animal owners/pet animals).

Welfare at slaughter and killing

FVE: slaughter without stunning is "unacceptable"

Brussels, 10 March 2009 - The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) welcomes the draft EU Regulation dealing with the protection of animals at the time of killing. This piece of legislation "clearly constitutes a step forward for the level of animal welfare in slaughterhouses", confirmed Walter Winding, FVE president.

However, to make sure that the new welfare rules are correctly applied, enforcement procedures in case of non-compliance are needed. The FVE recommends that the role of the competent authority in this matter is clearly stated in the Regulation.
