Trade MEPs back proposed EU concession to end hormone beef trade war

A proposed EU concession to help put an end to the 20-year hormone beef trade war with the USA and Canada was unanimously endorsed by the International Trade Committee on Thursday. The proposal, which would raise the EU import quota for beef from animals not treated with hormones, will be put to a vote by Parliament as a whole on 13 March.

Animal Welfare: Commission urges 13 Member States to implement ban on laying hen cages

European Commission, via a letter of formal notice requesting for information, called on Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Romania to take action to address deficiencies in the implementation of EU legislation concerning the welfare of animals, and specifically to implement the ban on "un-enriched" cages for laying hens which applied as of 1st January 2012, as laid down by Directive 1999/74/EC.

FVE welcomes Animal Welfare Strategy but wished the Commission to be more ambitious

On 19 January, the European Commission adopted the 2012-2015 Animal Welfare strategy paper.

FVE is pleased that several of its recommendations have been taken into consideration. On the other hand the Federation regrets that the document is not more ambitious in its objectives and planned action: the strategy "could have gone further" in the field of companion animals.

Fitness for transport guidelines provide animal welfare boost

The “Guidelines to assess fitness for transport of adult bovine animals”, prepared by Eurogroup for animals, Animals’ Angels, UECBV (European Livestock and Meat Trading Union), FVE (Federation of Veterinarians of Europe), IRU (International Road Transport Union) and ELT (European Livestock Transporters) are officially published.
