FVE attends EFSA's Stakeholder Consultative Platform in Parma

Efsa's Stakeholder Consultative Platform met on 24-25 April in Parma. EFSA's Executive Director, Ms Catherine Gelsain-Lanéelle, opened at the meeting and welcomed all particpants. She gave an overview of the EFSA highlights 2007, the main outcome of the 5th anniversary forum and summit in November of last year, the key objectives for 2008 and possible areas for 2009-2013.

MRSA: Raising awareness is key to control

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a growing problem in both animals and humans and urgent action is required – and such action should be based on a shared responsibility between the veterinary and the public health sector. That was the main conclusion of the recent European conference on MRSA, organised in Brussels on 8 April by the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE), and supported by TAIEX (DG Enlargement).

First meeting of the Working Group on Nanotechnologies of the Advisory group on the Food Chain, Animal Health and Plant Health This first meeting of the newly established working group on Nanotechnologies was organised by the European Commission last 10 March in order to define the scope and aims of the group and to give an overview on the Commissions activities around nanotechnologies.

The Commissioner for Health, Markos Kyprianou submitted his resignation to the Commission President, José Manuel Barroso last 27 February. Mr Kyprianou resigned to accept the invitation to return to Cyprus to become its new foreign minister. Kyprianou was appointed EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer affairs in 2004.

During the telephone conference of the FVE transport working group held last 26 February, participants agreed that the new animal transport regulation has not improved the welfare of animals during transport, especially during long distance transport, mainly because these transports were not done according to the Regulation.

Walter Winding and Jan Vaarten traveled to Parma, Italy in order to meet the Executive Director of the European Food Safety Authority, Ms Catherine Geslain-Lanéelle last 26 February. The FVE President presented the FVE objectives for the coming months, in particular the 'One Health Concept' and the challenges and opportunities that it arises in relation to veterinary medicine and public health. Dr Winding also highlighted the common goals shared by FVE and EFSA in the fields of animal health, animal welfare and public health and his wish for further cooperation between the two organisations. European Parliament intends to re-authorise use of catering waste for animal feed purposes FVE has been asked to support an initiative from Nutreco Public Affairs to prevent the adoption of an amendment put forward by the European Parliament which intends to re-authorise the use of catering waste for animal feed purposes. Following the outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease in 2001, it was decided in 2002 to ban the the use of catering waste for animal feed with certains exceptions in Germany and Austria (Regulation EC 1774/2002) .

Draft opinions on animal cloning from the European Food Safety Authority and the European Group on Ethics EFSA has launched a public consultation on its draft scientific opinion on the implications of animal cloning on food safety, animal health and welfare and the environment. The work follows a request from the European Commission (EC) to EFSA for advice on this issue in February 2007.

Long awaited report on systems of rearing laying hens published in Commission website The Commission adopted this report last 8 January 2008. It details a number of independent scientific and socio-economic studies which lend support to the upcoming ban on unenriched cages. The report was drawn up taking into account an EFSA opinion on this subject, a specific socio-economic study and a Community-funded research project ("LAYWEL") which investigated the welfare implications of changes in production systems for laying hens. Advisory note to veterinarians regarding fibrosarcoma at sites of injection in cats In response to increasing concern, the Committee for Veterinary Medicinal Products (CVMP) has produced an advisory notice for veterinarians on the development in cats of fibrosarcomas at sites of administration of veterinary medicinal products.
