FEEVA (Federation of European Equine Veterinary Associations)

FEEVA was created in Strasbourg in 1998 when equine veterinary practitioners from different EU countries met to discuss with European Parliament members the issue of medicine regulations concerning horses. Restriction of authorized medicines to treat horses was a thread to horse health and welfare. Since that time, numerous national equine veterinary associations have joined FEEVA to work on all matters related to horse health and welfare throughout Europe together with the need to safeguard public health.

FEEVA Position on Identification and Registration of horses (2010)

FEEVA considers that electronic identification of horses in combination with the passport and diagram and registration in one central European Union (EU) database is the method of choice to identify and register all horses. Full position can be found here.

FEEVA Position on the need for slaughter of horses for humane consumption (2010)

FEEVA recognizes the need for humane slaughter and disposal of horses as a natural
consequence and a natural part of keeping horses for sport, pleasure and/or food production. FEEVA considers consumption of horse meat to be a matter of individual choice. FEEVA believes that horses, for welfare reasons, should be slauthered as close to the point of origin as possible, keeping transport to a minimum. Full position can be found here

FEEVA Position on Infectious Disease Surveillance (2010)

FEEVA welcomes the development and implementation of disease surveillance programmes by the regulatory authorities and the equine industry across the member states.

FEEVA also welcomes the accurate and prompt reporting of the results of disease surveillance programmes to ensure ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of disease control measures. Full position can be found here.

FEEVA Realisations: top

FEEVA considerably enlarged medicines availability for horses!

In 1998, FEEVA representatives met with several Members of the European Parliament to propose an official passport for horses. And, 7 years later the passport was there, which now makes that you can declare a horse a companion animal and thereby considerably enlarging medicine availability for horses.

Furthermore, thanks to FEEVA a essential list of products for treatment of horses was adopted end 2006 (CR No 1950/2006). Veterinary practitioners will be allowed to make use of the listed products for the treatment of horses and other equidae intended for human consumption. The administration of these products will need to be registered in the horse passport and the withdrawal period for all products is 6 months. Horses NOT intended for human consumption according to their passport can already be treated with these products following the so-called cascade for non-foodproducing animals – provided the national authority has implemented this possibility in the national legislation.

In 2009, thanks to the extensive lobby work of FEEVA in collaboration with FVE the list of essential products was extended to substances which bring added clinical benefit compared to other treatment options available for equidae.

FEEVA Origin: top

The concept of FEEVA was born in late 1997 out of reaction to the loss of licensed Equine veterinary medicines such as 'bute'. Tribute for its birth must be given to Henk Vaarkamp and Willem Back, both from the Netherlands. Further issues appearing on the agenda were besides ‘Medicine availability’, Passports and Microchipping, EU Recognized Equine Clinicians, Equine Welfare and Horse Transport.
